There are over 300 acupuncture points located along the 12 main energetic pathways (called "Meridians") of the body. Acupuncture needles are commonly inserted at these locations. There are also areas on the body that are considered a micro system (i.e. ears, hands, feet, etc.) and these points may be used on their own or in addition to the main acupuncture points. In addition, there may be painful or "ashi" points where needles can be inserted.

Once the needles are inserted, they are retained in the body for a period of 20-40 minutes, depending upon the condition.
